The Cumberland County Fire Chiefs Association presents
Ignite the Night Firefighters Ball
Embassy Suites, Fayetteville
October 17, 2026
5PM - 11PM
This special evening is dedicated to celebrating our firefighter community and fostering stronger connections among its members.
Above all, it will serve as the primary fundraiser for a vital new initiative: promoting mental health and wellness resources for the courageous men and women of our fire service.
Firefighting is an extraordinarily demanding profession. In addition to the well-known physical risks, it imposes a heavy, often invisible burden on the mental and emotional well-being of first responders. Repeated exposure to trauma, high-stress incidents, and shift work can accumulate over time, leading to elevated rates of behavioral health challenges. National research shows that firefighters experience significantly higher risks PTSD, depression, anxiety, and suicide compared to the general population.
These rates are comparable to those seen in military veterans. However, unlike military personnel, firefighters endure ongoing, cumulative trauma without reprieve. They drive past the sites of devastating wrecks, burned homes, and lost lives every day, reliving those moments in their communities where they live and work. This daily immersion in trauma intensifies the psychological toll, fostering isolation, irritability, and emotional numbing that can persist long after a shift ends.
The impact extends beyond the firefighters themselves. Their families, who often bear the brunt of secondary traumatic stress, experience anxiety, worry, and emotional strain from supporting their loved one. Strained relationships, disrupted routines, and heightened family stress are common, contributing to divorce rates that are three times higher than the general population (Jahnke, 2025). A lack of strong community support exacerbates these risks. Research shows that individuals with a weaker sense of community are far more likely to report symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress.
